The vlog thing...

I know that's not the name of a song, but I don't have a song of the day. So here goes.

I recently discovered the phenomenon of vlogging. Well no, I knew about it. In that I have watched youtube videos where people just post random crap, a bit like what I do here except theirs are videos. For example I used to watch panacea81's make up vlogs religiously - now I just watch them if I need a particular idea for my eye make up. But, I digress...
I knew that people posting videos on YouTube could use them as advertisement, or as a platform to better themselves and be "discovered". As I said, I watched panacea81 and was happy that Lauren Luke became so successful on the back of her videos, she really deserved it. I also knew that this was how Justin Bieber came into being - my little sister spent ages as a teen watching his video of "I'll Be" and other videos, and next thing he's the massive idiot we all see him as today :) (I'd like to point out that I don't mind Justin Bieber as a person, and he is talented as his YouTube videos used to show. I hate what he's become, and his strangely crazy and delusional fans. They're really scary).

What I didn't realise is that YouTube PAY people to vlog. Such as Alex Day and Charlie McDonnell. Now I respect these guys, because they're really good musicians, and I like their story. But they just independently decided to start posting vidoes on YouTube. They became friends through this, Charlie (through charlieissocoollike) was the first UK person to reach 1 million subscribers, Alex Day penned the name Trock for Dr Who fan-rock (Time Lord Rock) and now they both live together in a house that they essentially pay for through their videos. This amazes me.

It makes you think, what are we doing wrong? Coz I have to say, it's not as if things that are massively went on in Alex Day's life when he began vlogging (I don't know about Charlie yet, I haven't watched many of his videos yet). And now he's had a single in the UK Top 10 singles chart, and Charlie was apparently asked to go on Celebrity Big Brother. I'm pretty sure I'm just amazingly jealous, and it makes me wish I could do something similar - I mean here I am writing a blog that I only started a week ago, in my massively messy room, in a house I share with students, with £15 to my name because a stupid website took a £45 subscription out this morning because I didn't realise they automatically updated it after it ended (and it's for a stupid website too, I was drunk when I subscribed the first time). So, my life isn't going well, and I'm jealous that it appears that they did very little to get to where they are today. Man. But fair play to them.
